Intro to Rowing Event - Fredericton, NB

The application period for Soldier On members wishing to participate in the Introduction to Rowing event from 5-7 June is now open. The application deadline is 3 May 2024.

AIM AND SCOPE OF EVENT:
Soldier On is partnering with Two Rivers Rowing to offer participants the opportunity to learn about rowing. This event will  provide a safe environment to focus on learning technique, first on rowing machines/ergs then on the water using stable rowing shells with experienced, certified coaches informed mentors. Participants will learn the importance of technique, the power of the rowing stroke, personal power, the equipment, tools used, and the terminology of the sport.

The number of Soldier On participants is limited to 10.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: 
Any serving member or veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) who reside within 1 hour of the Fredericton who acquired a permanent physical or mental health illness or injury while enrolled as a member of the CAF; whether attributable or not to service.

Selected Serving members will require the approval of their Chain of Command to participate. 

DRAFT SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:
Day 1 Dry Land Session - 2 Hours
10 participants 

Day 2 Water session 2 Hours for each group.
Group 1 (5 participants) 
Group 2 (5 participants) 

Day 3 Water session 2 Hours for each group.
Group 1 (5 participants) 
Group 2 (5 participants) 

TRANSPORTATION & MEALS:
Participants are advised that meals and transportation will not be provided by Soldier On for this event. Participants will be required to arrange their own travel to and from the event location, travel and meals are not eligible for reimbursement for this event.

Mental & Physical Requirements:
Applicants must be able to tolerate 2 hours of moderate activities for 3 days in a row. Due to the busy activity schedule, applicants must have a limited requirement for rest throughout the day. 

Participants will wet launch for the on water sessions which requires rowers to walk out into the water and hoist themselves using arm strength into the rowing shell. Staff can provide supportive assistance to boat entry. Rowing will be at the pace of the participants.

Applicants will be joined with other ill/injured members and civilians, and therefore should be able to function in a social environment.

To ensure everyone’s safety, applicants understand that they should aim to adopt personal practices focused on communicable disease prevention such as health awareness, staying home when sick and regular hand cleaning to help prevent the spread.
