Atlantic Summer Sports Camp - Halifax, NS

The application period for Soldier On members wishing to participate in the Atlantic Summer Sports Camp from 17-21 June is now open. The application deadline is 10 May 2024.

AIM AND SCOPE OF EVENT:
Soldier On is looking for open-minded members who are interested in being introduced to a variety of activities to inspire them to become active in their journey. Selected participants will take this opportunity to step outside their comfort zone and participate in 3 full days of activities including Surfing, Wheelchair Rugby, Stand-Up Paddle Boarding, Cycling, Hiking and Kayaking. As a group we will learn, and discover new skills and a passions for sports that can be incorporated into an active lifestyle. 
All activities will be facilitated by certified instructors and all equipment will be provided.

The number of Soldier On participants is limited to 12.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: 
Any serving member or veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) from NS, NL, NB, PE who acquired a permanent physical or mental health illness or injury while enrolled as a member of the CAF; whether attributable or not to service.

Selected Serving members will require the approval of their Chain of Command to participate.

Wednesday 19 June-Sport Instruction and Participation
Thursday 20 June-Sport Instruction and Participation
Friday 21 June- Travel

TRANSPORTATION & MEALS:
Travel assistance will be provided and coordinated by the Soldier On Regional Coordinator in conjunction with Soldier On Operations. The most economical means of transportation to and from events will be prioritized and discussed with members via the event OPI or delegate.

Meals during transportation will be compensated, all meals during event will take place at the mess or as a group.  All participants, including those local to the event are expected to stay at accommodations and travel with the group to all the activities.

Mental & Physical Requirements:
Applicants must be able to tolerate 8+ hours of moderate-high paced activities for 3 days in a row. Due to the busy activity schedule, applicants must have a limited requirement for rest throughout the day. 

Activities will have different physical requirements, activities with specifics requirements are listed below.

Participants must understand that they will participate in all scheduled activities. Some activities will require participants to wear a lifejacket at all times when they in and around water. 

Participants will be required to do a wet entry into their kayak and onto their paddle board and surfboard using their own strength with some assistance from staff if required.

During the cycling session participants will be required to peddle 15-20 km's on a flat, smooth trail at a recreational pace.

During the hiking session participants will hike 7km's on a somewhat rugged, muddy, uneven, rocky terrain carrying their own small pack with water, snacks and necessities.

Applicants will be joined with other ill/injured members and civilians, and therefore should be able to function in a social environment. Applicants are advised that the accommodations, meals and some activities for this event is be located at Canadian Armed Forces bases/facilities, and thus they may be exposed to a day-to-day military environment. 

Applicants also acknowledge that there will be no alcohol allowed in the accommodations, and may be required to share accommodations.

Soldier On, PSP and CAF TG aim to provide a safe environment for all participants and staff. To ensure everyone’s safety, applicants understand that they should aim to adopt personal practices focused on communicable disease prevention such as health awareness, staying home when sick and regular hand cleaning to help prevent the spread.
