Geology Educational Hike - Halifax, NS

The application period for Soldier On members wishing to participate in the Geology Education Hike - Lawrencetown Provincial park on the 13th of June 2024 is now open. The application deadline is 16 May 2024.

AIM AND SCOPE OF EVENT: 
Geo Learns Instructor and guide Louise Leslie, an experienced geologist will take participants on a hike along the Lawrencetown Beach Park to hear about the geology of the area and do some fun, hands-on activities to learn about the rock names of the many pebbles that are on the beach. All participants will receive a GeoLearns Pebble Guide Kit, an educational resource that includes the Pebble Guide (a rock identification guide), hand lens, ruler, pencil, sample bags and field journal. This event is perfect for those who love collecting pebbles from the beach and are curious about learning more about geology and rock origins.

The number of Soldier On participants is limited to 10.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: 
Any serving member or veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) from within two hours drive from the event location who acquired a permanent physical or mental health illness or injury while enrolled as a member of the CAF; whether attributable or not to service.

Selected Serving members will require the approval of their Chain of Command to participate. 

DRAFT SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:
On the 13th of June arrive at parking lot for 1030 - Lawrencetown Provincial park. Where we will then hike to the Lawrencetown beach cafe for a light lunch before starting our Geology exploration and hike along the coast to wrap up around 1500 as a group.

TRANSPORTATION & MEALS:
Participants are advised that transportation will not be provided by Soldier On for this event. Participants will be required to arrange their own travel to and from the event location. The following meals will be provided during the event: Light lunch.

Mental & Physical Requirements:
Applicants must be able to tolerate 3 hours of light/moderate paced activities for 3 hours in a row. Due to the busy activity schedule, applicants must have a limited requirement for rest throughout the day. 

Applicants will be joined with other ill/injured members and civilians, and therefore should be able to function in a social environment.
