INTRO TO BLACKSMITHING, COLES ISLAND, NB

The application period for Soldier On members wishing to participate in ONE DAY of the Intro Blacksmithing, 15, 16, or 17 October is now open. The application deadline is 24 September.

AIM AND SCOPE OF EVENT: Soldier On is teaming up with Longdog Smithy to bring you an Intro to Blacksmithing course. Spend the day at the forge learning the fundamentals of fire, metal, and tool control in a safe, hands-on environment. Under expert guidance, you’ll craft items like hooks, bottle openers, and outdoor cooking tools—each designed to build skills, confidence, and give you something useful to take home. It’s also a great chance to connect with peers and share the experience together.

The number of Soldier On participants is limited to 4 participants each day for a total of 12 participants.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Any serving member or veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) from the from within 2 hours of the facility in Coles Island who acquired a permanent physical or mental health illness or injury while enrolled as a member of the CAF; whether attributable or not to service.

Selected Serving members will require the approval of their Chain of Command to participate. 

DRAFT SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:

  • 0900hrs-1200hrs Safety Brief and Skills Introduction
  • 1200hrs-1230hrs Lunch Break (Participant Packed Lunch)
  • 1200hrs-1600hrs Skill and complete projects
  • 1600hrs-Closing Remarks and Departure

  • Applicants must be able to tolerate 6-7 hours of moderate paced activity Due to the busy activity schedule, applicants must have a limited requirement for rest throughout the day, short breaks and a longer lunch will be built into the schedule. 
     
    This full-day workshop involves standing for periods of time, using upper body strength and coordination for hammering and tool work, and being comfortable around heat, sparks, and noise. Participants should be able to focus, follow safety instructions, and enjoy working in a group setting. Regular breaks and guidance will ensure a safe and supportive experience for all. 
     
    Applicants will be joined with other ill/injured members and civilians and therefore should be able to function in a social environment.
