Photography Clinic - Halifax
The application period for Soldier On members wishing to participate in the HALIFAX Photography clinic on 29 & 30 October 2025 is now open.

AIM AND SCOPE OF EVENT:
This two-day photography workshop is designed for Soldier On members who have a basic understanding of manual camera settings, their own DSLR or mirrorless camera gear, and an interest in areas like portrait, sports, or product photography. The program will take place in an indoor environment, focusing on shooting in a yoga studio.
Participants will explore both portrait-style photography and slow-moving action/sport-style shots. In practice, half the group will take part in yoga while the other half photographs, then swap roles, allowing everyone to expand their experience with portrait and action photography in a supportive setting. In addition to hands-on shooting, the workshop includes editing practice, indoor lighting exercises, and group discussions. Topics will cover camera gear, lighting, creativity, post-processing, and working with subjects. This is a fun and collaborative experience designed to help you build confidence behind the camera, sharpen your skills, and share creative ideas with like-minded peers.
Recommended Prerequisites for ParticipantsParticipants will be required to provide their own camera and have a basic working knowledge of how to use it.
- Knowledge of manual mode on DSLR or mirrorless cameras
- Own camera and lens(es)
- Basic knowledge of photo editing
- Interest in portrait photography, photojournalism, sports, or product photography
- Laptop with Adobe editing software (optional)
- Willingness to share, participate in discussions, and present work for group feedback
The number of Soldier On participants is limited to
10.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
Any serving member or veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF)
from Nova Scotia and Newfoundland who acquired a permanent physical or mental health illness or injury while enrolled as a member of the CAF; whether attributable or not to service.

DRAFT SCHEDULE OF EVENTS: 28 & 31 October (travel days for those out side of 1hr drive from event location)
29 October
- 0800hrs-1200hrs: Intros, Discussions, Camera Basics, Indoor Shooting
- 1200hrs-1300hrs LUNCH
- 1300hrs-1600hrs: Indoor Shooting, Editing.
30 October
- 0800hrs-1200hrs: Indoor Shooting
- 1200hrs-1300hrs: LUNCH
- 1300hrs-1600hrs: Discussion, Editing, Presentations
TRANSPORTATION & MEALS:
Travel assistance will be provided and coordinated by the Soldier On Regional Coordinator in conjunction with Soldier On Operations. The most economical means of transportation to and from events will be prioritized and discussed with members via the event OPI or delegate. Soldier On will only provide R&Q and travel assistance to those outside of 100km from the event location. Those that are local will be required to arrange their own travel to and from the event location. The following meals will be provided to the group during the event: Group Lunch.
Mental & Physical Requirements:
Applicants must be able to tolerate 6–7 hours of light-paced activities for two consecutive days. Due to the busy schedule, applicants should have only a limited need for rest throughout the day. Participants should be comfortable with light physical activity like yoga and able to moving around indoors while carrying their camera gear. The workshop will also involve periods of sitting for editing and group discussions, as well as focusing on creative and technical tasks that require attention and concentration. A willingness to join in group discussions and share work in a supportive setting is encouraged. No advanced physical or mental requirements are necessary beyond an interest in learning and engaging with others.
Applicants will be joined with other ill/injured members and civilians, and therefore should be able to function in a social environment. Applicants are advised that the activity and meals for this event is/may be located at Canadian Armed Forces bases/facilities, and thus they may be exposed to a day-to-day military environment. Applicants also acknowledge that there will be no alcohol allowed in the accommodations, and will be required to share accommodations.
