Honey Harvest - 2026 - Oromocto, NB

The application period for Soldier On members wishing to participate in the Honey Harvest Experience from 25-27 August is now open. The application deadline is 23 July 2026.

AIM AND SCOPE OF EVENT: 
Offered in partnership with River Bend Bees, this hands-on Soldier On experience introduces participants to the rewarding world of beekeeping. The program begins with an introductory classroom session covering honey bee biology, hive management, and beekeeping safety before participants enter the apiary to work alongside experienced beekeepers. The experience concludes with a honey harvest, where participants will learn how honey is extracted and prepared from hive to jar. This unique program provides an opportunity to connect with nature, learn new skills, and experience the wellness benefits of working with bees in a supportive environment

The number of Soldier On participants is limited to 12.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: 
Any serving member or veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) from within an hour of the Fredericton/Oromocto area who acquired a permanent physical or mental health illness or injury while enrolled as a member of the CAF; whether attributable or not to service.

Selected Serving members will require the approval of their Chain of Command to participate.

  • 0900hrs-1200hrs - Info and Orientation at the Military Family Resource Centre
26 August
  • 0900hrs-1200hrs - Apiary Experience: Working with the Hives (Riverbend Bees in Hoyt)
27 August
  • 0900hrs-1200hrs - Honey Harvest at the Military Family Resource Centre 
TRANSPORTATION & MEALS:
Participants are advised that meals and transportation will not be provided by Soldier On for this event. Participants will be required to arrange their own travel to and from the event location, travel and meals are not eligible for reimbursement for this event.

Mental & Physical Requirements:
Applicants must be able to tolerate 3 hours of light paced activities for 3 days in a row. Due to the busy activity schedule, applicants must have a limited requirement for rest throughout the day. 

Participants should be comfortable spending time outdoors in varying weather conditions and capable of standing and walking on uneven ground for extended periods. The apiary experience requires wearing protective beekeeping equipment, including a bee suit, gloves, and veil, which may feel warm during summer conditions. Participants should be able to follow safety instructions, remain calm and focused around live honey bees, and work respectfully as part of a group. No previous beekeeping experience is required. Individuals with severe bee sting allergies (anaphylaxis) should consult their healthcare provider before applying, as direct exposure to honey bees is a core component of this experience.

Applicants will be joined with other ill/injured members and civilians, and therefore should be able to function in a social environment. Applicants are advised that the activity may be located at Canadian Armed Forces bases/facilities, and thus they may be exposed to a day-to-day military environment.
