Hands on Adirondack Workshop - 20026 - Halifax, NS
The application period for Soldier On members wishing to participate in the Hands On Adirondack Workshop 21 & 22 February 2026 is now open.

AIM AND SCOPE OF EVENT:
In collaboration with Lee valley in Halifax - This two-day Hands On Adirondack workshop is designed to introduce participants who are new to woodworking to the fundamentals of using various power tools and basic woodworking techniques in a supportive, team-based environment.
Participants will work together to build two classic Adirondack/Muskoka chairs while gaining hands-on experience with measuring, cutting, sanding, finishing, and assembly. The goal of the workshop is to build confidence and practical skills so participants can successfully build an Adirondack chair on their own after the session.
Each participant will receive a chair template kit to take home, enabling them to recreate the project independently using the skills learned during the workshop.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
Any serving member or veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF)
from within one hour from the event location who acquired a permanent physical or mental health illness or injury while enrolled as a member of the CAF; whether attributable or not to service.

Serving members will require the approval of their Chain of Command to participate.
DRAFT SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:
21 February Day 1:
• Tool safety and basic woodworking techniques
• Cutting and sanding chair components
• Applying the first coat of finish
22 February Day 2:
• Assembly techniques
• Final build and project completion
TRANSPORTATION & MEALS:
Participants are advised that meals and transportation will not be provided by Soldier On for this event. Participants will be required to arrange their own travel to and from the event location, travel and meals are not eligible for reimbursement for this event.
Mental & Physical Requirements
Applicants must be able to tolerate 6 - 8 hours of light/moderate paced activities while standing for the majority of the chair making for 2 days in a row. Due to the busy activity schedule, applicants must have a limited requirement for rest throughout the day.
Participants must be able to safely and effectively take part in a hands-on woodworking environment. The workshop involves the use of hand and power tools, standing and moving within a shop setting for extended periods with scheduled breaks, and working collaboratively as part of a team. Participants should have sufficient physical ability to handle materials, operate tools with instruction and supervision, and perform tasks such as cutting, sanding, finishing, and assembly while following established safety procedures and wearing required personal protective equipment.
Participants should also have the cognitive ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions, maintain focus and situational awareness in an active workshop environment, and make safe decisions throughout the session. A willingness to learn new skills, ask for assistance when needed, and work at a steady, cooperative pace is essential.
Applicants will be joined with other ill/injured members and civilians, and therefore should be able to function in a social environment.
