Learn to Kayak - Calgary, AB
Soldier On, in collaboration with paddlestation kayaking, will be hosting a Learn to Kayak/float event in Calgary, AB. This will be a one-day event held on Wednesday, 5 July 23.
This activity will bring together both serving and retired ill/injured CAF members, allowing participants to connect through peer support and encourage a healthy and active lifestyle. The event will provide an opportunity for Soldier On participants to learn or improve kayaking paddling skills.
Instruction and mentoring will be provided by a paddle station guide/instructor.
A guide and 2 staff will be present for the entirety of the session.
Participants must wear a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) at all times while on the water.

Schedule:
Wednesday, 5 July 23
11:30 hrs: Meet at Shouldice Park
11:35 hrs: Welcome Brief/Introductions
12:00 hrs: Paddling Instruction
12:10 hrs: Commence Kayaking down Bow River
15:00 hrs: End Kayak
15:15 hrs: Board bus at St Patricks Island
15:45 hrs : Arrive at Shouldice Park
The number of Soldier On participants is limited to 20.
Minimum Eligibility Criteria:
Any serving member or veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) from the Calgary geographical area who acquired a permanent physical or mental health illness or injury while enrolled as a member of the CAF; whether attributable or not to service.
Serving Members:
Medical clearance may be required by your chain of command.
Mental & Physical Requirements:
Participants must be able to tolerate up to five (4) hours of moderate paced activities throughout the day. Due to the busy activity schedule, applicants must have a limited requirement for rest throughout the day.
This event will require a variety of physical movements and will be held outdoors, therefore participants need to dress appropriately. Should there be unfavourable weather conditions for participants and instructors travel, Soldier On will endeavour to reschedule the event.
Participants will be joined with other ill/injured members and civilians, and therefore should be able to function in a social environment.

Soldier On events are planned in accordance with municipal, provincial, territorial and federal public health measures (PHM) and regulations as well as the Canadian Armed Forces health policy and guidelines. The health and safety of Soldier On participants and staff, PSP staff, and CAF TG personnel are paramount. While specific safety precautions for each event will depend on the scope, scale and location of the event, the utmost care will be undertaken to ensure the risk associated with the spread of COVID-19 is very low.
Confirmation Details
The event OPI will confirm in writing with the participants selected for this activity.
An activity delivery questionnaire will be sent to selected participants to complete and return. This will assist the event OPI and the sport delivery partner with the planning of logistics and the activity.
A joining instruction will be issued prior to event; ensuring applicants are authorized to participate IAW applicable policies & eligibility criteria.
Conclusion
Calgary Kayaking is an event which will encourage ill/injured serving CAF personnel and veterans to develop new skills, engage with others while personally challenging themselves.
