Sledge Hockey Workshop and Drop-in - Victoria, BC
Soldier On, in cooperation with Sledge Hockey Victoria, are hosting a 2hr sledge hockey workshop and two sledge hockey community drop-in opportunities. Coaches from Sledge Hockey Victoria will provide a 2hr workshop at the Wurtele Arena on 13 January 2023 and will be prepared to welcome you into their exiting community programming on the 14th and 21st January at the Juan De Fuca Arena/West Shore Parks & Recreation.
This activity will bring together both serving and retired ill/injured CAF members, allowing participants to connect through peer support and encourage a healthy and active lifestyle.
Sledge Hockey Victoria encourages inclusivity and is able to accommodate able-bodies as well as differently abled bodies. All are encouraged to apply.
This activity is open to all Soldier On members within a 1.5hr drive from CFB Esquimalt, Victoria.
There is no cost for either portion of this event however, should parking costs apply they will be at the cost of the participant. Travel assistance is not provided for this event as it is intended for those local to the Victoria geographic area.
Those interested in participating are requested to be prepared to participate in all three events; 2 hour workshop + 2 sledge hockey drop-in.
Assistance is provided with registration and filling out the application and waiver form if requested.
Sledge Hockey Workshop: 13 January 2023 - 1530-1800hrs
This workshop intends to introduce all participants to the fundamentals of the sledge hockey sport in a safe and fun environment. All equipment will be provided and fitted to the participants. Workshop will consist of hands-on opportunity as well as some education and practice on game-play
Sledge Hockey Drop-in: 14 and 21 January 2023 - 1600-1700hrs
All those who are selected for this event will also be given the opportunity to participate in Sledge Hockey Drop-in at the Juan De Fuca Arena (West Shore Parks & Recreation) during the above dates and time. This is an existing community event that occurs weekly. The intent of these practices is to integrate with and grow the Sledge Hockey community. You will get the chance to practice the skills that you have learned in a safe and friendly environment, add to those skills, and play some games. All equipment is provided.
In-person instruction, equipment and guidance will be provided by Sledge Hockey Victoria.

The number of Soldier On participants is limited to 10.
Minimum Eligibility Criteria:
Any serving member or veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) from VICTORIA geographic area and within a 1.5hr drive who acquired a permanent physical or mental health illness or injury while enrolled as a member of the CAF; whether attributable or not to service.
Medical clearance may be required by your chain of command.
Mental & Physical Requirements:
Participants must be able to tolerate approximately 2 hours of moderate to high paced physical activity with intermitted rest; must be able to remain in a seated position with feet outstretched in front, as well as maintain enough core stability to remain in said sitting position. Participants should have limited mobility issues in the upper body and should retain enough upper body strength to stabilize themselves in a seated position.
Sledge Hockey Victoria is prepared to accommodate all ability levels; please include in your nomination if you believe you will require additional consideration for equipment fitting.
Participants will be joined with other ill/injured members and civilians, and therefore should be able to function in a social environment.
Participants will also be participating within community based programming and are asked to remain cognisant that the intent of the community based programming is to have fun, increase learned skills and grow the sport of Sledge Hockey; sportsmanlike conduct will be of utmost importance.
Soldier On events are planned in accordance with municipal, provincial, territorial and federal public health measures (PHM) and regulations as well as the Canadian Armed Forces health policy and guidelines. The health and safety of Soldier On participants and staff, PSP staff, and CAF TG personnel are paramount. While specific safety precautions for each event will depend on the scope, scale and location of the event, the utmost care will be undertaken to ensure the risk associated with the spread of COVID-19 is very low.
The event OPI will confirm in writing with the participants selected for this activity.
An activity delivery questionnaire will be sent to selected participants to complete and return. This will assist the event OPI and the sport delivery partner with the planning of logistics and the activity.
A joining instruction will be issued prior to event; ensuring applicants are authorized to participate IAW applicable policies & eligibility criteria.
Sledge Hockey Victoria Workshop and Drop-in is an event which will encourage ill/injured serving CAF personnel and veterans to develop new skills, engage with others while personally challenging themselves.
