Open Water Scuba Course - Edmonton, AB

Soldier On will host a 5-day Basic Open Water SCUBA Course in Edmonton, AB in collaboration with Northwest Scuba Ventures. This course will comprise of an online learning component (approximately 12 hours) that will need to be completed before the pool phase, two/three days of pool dives and two open water dives. All components of the course are mandatory to receive certification. This is a local event for Soldier On members residing in the Edmonton geographical area. Selected participants must provide necessary medical authorization and commit to attend all portions of the course. Please note this event will be based at the West Edmonton Mall water park for the pool portion and the Summerside Lake (South Edmonton) for the open water portion (in the summer of 2023). Please note that your application cannot be accepted unless you have your Medical Doctor complete the PADI Medical Questionnaire AND the medical authorization portion of the Application Waiver form. In addition, we recognize that Veterans may have a cost associated with having a medical doctor fill out the documents, however that cost is not covered by Soldier On.

This activity will bring together both serving and retired ill/injured CAF members, allowing participants to connect through peer support and encourage a healthy and active lifestyle. The intent of this event is to create a safe and inclusive environment for Soldier On members residing in the Edmonton region to achieve their basic open water dive certification.
There is no cost for the course to participants. Travel assistance is not provided for this event as it is in the Edmonton geographical area.

The Basic Open Water SCUBA Course will provide 10 participants with a 5-day Introduction to SCUBA and a Basic SCUBA Certification upon completion.  Certification will allow for Soldier On members to pursue diving as a sport without additional training requirements. The activity will include instruction on Safety, Equipment and underwater drills and practice while wearing SCUBA equipment.  Adaptive diving is available.

Instruction throughout the event will be provided by Northwest Scuba Ventures
Members must complete and return with their application the attached PADI form.

The number of Soldier On participants is limited to 10.
Minimum Eligibility Criteria:
Any serving member or veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) who live within 90 minutes of Edmonton, AB who acquired a permanent physical or mental health illness or injury while enrolled as a member of the CAF; whether attributable or not to service. Participants must bring their own snacks and water bottles.  All necessary scuba diving gear will be provided and participants must also bring appropriate daily kit (PT clothing, swimwear, hygiene kit, towels.)
All Members:
Medical clearance is required for this event.
Serving members:
Chain of command approval is required.
Mental & Physical Requirements:
Participants interested in this event should possess basic swimming skills and be deemed medically fit for diving. Medical authorization is required for participants. Participants should possess a base level of total body strength and be comfortable in aquatic environments.
Members must be able to wear SCUBA equipment including a diving mask, snorkel, fins, SCUBA tank, buoyancy compensation vest, weighted dive vest and will be expected to breathe oxygen through a dive regulator.
Participants must be able to tolerate 2 1/2 hours of moderate paced activities.  Due to the busy activity schedule, applicants must have a limited requirement for rest throughout the activity.

Participants will be joined with other ill/injured members and civilians, and therefore should be able to function in a social environment.  Participants also acknowledge that there will be no alcohol allowed during event.

Soldier On events are planned in accordance with municipal, provincial, territorial and federal public health measures (PHM) and regulations as well as the Canadian Armed Forces health policy and guidelines. The health and safety of Soldier On participants and staff, PSP staff, and CAF TG personnel are paramount.

While specific safety precautions for each event will depend on the scope, scale and location of the event, the utmost care will be undertaken to ensure the risk associated with the spread of COVID-19 is very low.

Confirmation Details
The event OPI will confirm in writing with the participants selected for this activity.
An activity delivery questionnaire will be sent to selected participants to complete and return. This will assist the event OPI and the sport delivery partner with the planning of logistics and the activity.
A joining instruction will be issued prior to event; ensuring applicants are authorized to participate IAW applicable policies & eligibility criteria.

The Edmonton Basic Open Water SCUBA Course is an event which will encourage ill/injured serving CAF personnel and veterans to develop new skills, engage with others while personally challenging themselves.
