Discover Scuba - Winnipeg, MB

Soldier On, in collaboration with 17 Wing Goldeyes Scuba Club and Underworld Scuba, is hosting two “Discover Scuba” events, each consisting of a three-hour introductory scuba course, in Winnipeg, MB. They will be conducted on Sunday, 29 January and Monday, 30 January 2023 from 1300-1600 hrs. Up to eight (8) ill/injured serving or retired members of the Canadian Armed Forces will have the opportunity to learn the basics of scuba diving in a safe and fun environment while incorporating their skills in various exercises and drills to become comfortable with the activity. This event will assist in the continuation of a healthy lifestyle.

This activity will bring together both serving and retired ill/injured CAF members, allowing participants to connect through peer support and encourage an active lifestyle.
 
Selected participants will be broken down into two groups of four (4) wherein each group will participant in a 3-hour session in a pool. Discover Scuba will include restorative exercises, scuba skills and drills as well as team building activities to develop confidence, achievement, and self-esteem focusing on ability not disability. The event can have positive effects on mental health, physical fitness and improved relationships, especially for those with physical and mental injuries. No scuba diving experience necessary!

Selected participates will be required to complete the service providers medical questionnaire (attached) and will require a physician’s signature. The form must be completed and signed prior to participation in the event.
 

Scuba equipment will be provided to all participants.
 
This event is open only to registered Solder On serving or retired members in the Winnipeg geographical area. Assistance is provided in registration and filling out the waiver if requested. Travel assistance is not provided for this event.

This event will afford participants the opportunity to learn the basics of scuba diving, providing an excellent opportunity to explore new possibilities and build a sense of identity that can lead to personal growth and a healthy lifestyle.  
All skill levels are welcome, but this program will move at a pace comfortable for a beginner or someone with no prior scuba experience.

The number of Soldier On participants is limited to eight (8). Four (4) per group.
 
Minimum Eligibility Criteria:
Any serving member or veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) from the Winnipeg geographical area who acquired a permanent physical or mental health illness or injury while enrolled as a member of the CAF; whether attributable or not to service.
 
Serving Members:
Medical clearance will be required by your chain of command.
 
Mental & Physical Requirements:
Participants must be able to tolerate three (3) hours of moderate paced activities throughout the session without being in violation of their MELs. Additionally, participants interested in this event should possess basic swimming skills and be deemed medically fit for diving.
 
Medical authorization for selected participations will be required prior to the event. Participants should have a base level of total body strength and be comfortable in aquatic environments.
 
Participants will be joined with other ill/injured members and civilians, and therefore should be able to function in a social environment.

COVID-19
Soldier On events are planned in accordance with municipal, provincial, territorial and federal public health measures (PHM) and regulations as well as the Canadian Armed Forces health policy and guidelines. The health and safety of Soldier On participants and staff, PSP staff, and CAF TG personnel are paramount. While specific safety precautions for each event will depend on the scope, scale and location of the event, the utmost care will be undertaken to ensure the risk associated with the spread of COVID-19 is very low.
 
Confirmation Details
The event OPI will confirm in writing with the participants selected for this activity.
 
A joining instruction will be issued prior to event; ensuring applicants are authorized to participate IAW applicable policies & eligibility criteria.

Conclusion
The Discover Scuba event will encourage ill/injured serving CAF personnel and veterans to develop new skills, engage with others while personally challenging themselves in an active, healthy and fun environment.
