Day On The Water - Wabamun Lake, AB
Soldier On, in collaboration with Dream Casters Society, will host an Introduction to Fishing event near Spruce Grove, AB. This event will be a one-day event conducted on May 15th, 17th and 18th, 2023 on Wabamun Lake, starting at 0800 each day. Two applicants will be selected for each day.
This is open to all registered Soldier On serving or retired members in the Edmonton Region. There is no cost for the event and assistance is provided in registration and filling out the waiver if requested.
Transport will be not supported for this event. Participants will meet the Soldier On staff and guides at the Spruce Grove Canadian Tire and they will be transported to and from Wabamun Lake. Fishing Licences will be purchased for the participants if they do not possess their own.
This activity will bring together both serving and retired ill/injured CAF members, allowing participants to connect through peer support and encourage a healthy and active lifestyle.
The aim and scope of the practice will be to introduce basic fishing lessons/techniques, but most of all – to enjoy a day on the water!!!
The event will include some beginner lessons and/or additional techniques, all of the gear will be supplied.
Assistance throughout the event will be provided courtesy of Dream Casters Society staff.
The number of Soldier On participants is limited to 6 (two per day).
Minimum Eligibility Criteria:
Any serving member or veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) in the Edmonton Region who acquired a permanent physical or mental health illness or injury while enrolled as a member of the CAF; whether attributable or not to service.
Serving Members:
Approval required by your chain of command before you are selected.
Mental & Physical Requirements:
Participants must be able to tolerate up to five (5) hours of light paced activities for one consecutive day. Due to the activity schedule, applicants must have a limited requirement for rest throughout the day.
Participants are advised that this event will be held outdoors, and weather conditions can change on the lake. Participants are expected to dress accordingly for the weather conditions.
Participants will be required to wear a life jacket at all times while around the water and on the boat. Participants will also be required to physically get themselves in and out of the boat, however the event is adaptive compatible.
Participants will be joined with other ill/injured members and civilians, and therefore should be able to function in a social environment.
Participants also acknowledge that there will be no alcohol allowed during the daily activities.

Soldier On events are planned in accordance with municipal, provincial, territorial and federal public health measures (PHM) and regulations as well as the Canadian Armed Forces health policy and guidelines. The health and safety of Soldier On participants and staff, PSP staff, and CAF TG personnel are paramount. While specific safety precautions for each event will depend on the scope, scale and location of the event, the utmost care will be undertaken to ensure the risk associated with the spread of COVID-19 is very low.
Confirmation Details
The event OPI will confirm in writing with the participants selected for this activity. A joining instruction will be issued prior to event; ensuring applicants are authorized to participate IAW applicable policies & eligibility criteria.
Conclusion
The Soldier On/Dream Caster fishing day is an event which will encourage ill/injured serving CAF personnel and veterans to develop new skills.
